Sporting Kansas City suffered a late-season blow as defender Graham Zusi, a core member of the franchise since 2009, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing foot surgery, the team announced Wednesday.

The 34-year-old Zusi had surgery on his left foot after he suffered a midfoot sprain on Oct. 7 against the Chicago Fire. He is expected to be sidelined for four-to-five months.

The loss comes at a tough time, with Sporting KC (9-6-3, 30 points) battling for the top spot in the Western Conference. They sit in third place in the conference, one point behind Seattle and Portland, entering Wednesday's action.

Zusi, who signed his latest contract extension with the team in 2018, has one goal and one assist this season in 15 games (14 starts). Over the past three games he has been replaced by Jaylin Lindsey.

Zusi has earned six MLS All-Star selections, with his last coming in 2018. The Orlando, Fla., native is the only player in league history to be chosen to four consecutive MLS All Star Games (2012-15).

In 294 career matches (252 starts) with the Kansas City Wizards (2009-10) and SKC, Zusi has tallied 29 goals and 66 assists. He is tied for the most games played in franchise history along with teammate Matt Besler.
