Promising Alabama forward Alex Tchikou underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn right Achilles on Wednesday.

The school said the 6-foot-11, 225-pound Tchikou underwent the surgery in Birmingham. He is expected to make a full recovery.

"It's really tough to see Alex go down for the season," Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats said in a statement. "Alex is someone who arrived in early August and had quickly established himself in the locker room. He has been a great fit with our program in terms of his work ethic and character. More importantly, he is an upbeat young man with a terrific attitude about him which will be important as he begins his rehabilitation. ...

"We know he's going to come back even stronger, and we look forward to getting him on the court next season."

Tchikou was a four-star recruit and was expected to make an immediate impact.

The native of Paris arrived in the U.S. at age 16 and played one season of high school ball at Dream City Christian in Glendale, Ariz.
