Los Angeles Sparks forward Candace Parker was named the 2020 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday.

Playing in her 13th season, the two-time league MVP averaged a league-leading 9.7 rebounds per game with 1.23 blocked shots, 1.18 steals and 14.7 points in 22 contests.

It is the first Defensive POY award for Parker, who received 16 votes from a national panel of 47 sportswriters and broadcasters.

Seattle Storm forward Alysha Clark (11 votes) finished second in the voting and Connecticut Sun forward Alyssa Thomas (10) was third. Also receiving votes were Phoenix Mercury forward Brianna Turner (four), Storm forward Breanna Stewart (three), Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (two) and 2019 winner Natasha Howard of the Storm (one).

Parker helped the Sparks allow the second-fewest points in the paint (31.3 per game). Los Angeles also finished third in the league in defensive rating, allowing 98.8 points per 100 possessions.

Parker, 34, is the third player from the Sparks to win the award, joining two-time winners Alana Beard (2017, 2018) and Lisa Leslie (2004, 2008).
