China's Wang Qiang beat Serena Williams in the third round of the U.S. Open on Friday, upsetting the No. 8 seed 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5.

The No. 27 seed will next face Ons Jabeur in the fourth round, after the Tunisian beat Caroline Wozniacki in what turned out be Wozniacki's final professional match.

Wang won despite numerous blown opportunities, including failing to close out Williams when serving for the match in the second set, losing three of four service points in the second-set tiebreaker, and blowing double-match point in the final game before finally closing it out on deuce, her third match point of the day.

While Williams dominated in first-serve points won (71 percent to 48) and winners (14-7), she committed 21 unforced errors to Wang's nine.

Williams, a seven-time winner in the Australian Open, is still seeking her 24th career Grand Slam victory and first since the 2017 Australian Open.

The two had met only once previously, with Williams nearly posting a double-bagel with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals of the 2019 U.S. Open. They were also scheduled to meet in the third round of the Miami Open last year but Williams withdrew with a knee injury before they could play.
