Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Tim Melia signed a contract extension through the 2022 season, the team announced Friday.

Financial terms weren't released. Melia made $325,000 in 2019, according to the MLS salary database.

The 33-year-old Melia has 45 shutouts in 153 MLS appearances (152 starts), and joined Sporting K.C. for the 2015 season.

"I could not be more excited to extend my contract with a club that has given me so much," Melia said in a statement. "To play any length of time at such a special and supportive club is something all athletes dream of. I only hope to help contribute in bringing our owners, technical staff, players and fans the rewards that Sporting deserves."

Melia made a career-best 111 saves last season but also allowed a career-worst 60 goals and compiled a 10-15-7 record, his first below-.500 season with Sporting K.C. He had 23 shutouts over the previous two seasons.

Melia was MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017, when he led the league in goals-against average (0.78), save percentage (78.4) and was second with 10 shutouts. He posted a career-high 13 shutouts in 2018.

"We are very happy to extend Tim's contract for the long term," Sporting Kansas City coach and sporting director Peter Vermes said in a statement. "He has great goalkeeping qualities and has performed at a consistently high level in MLS. Welcoming him for the next three seasons is a big positive for us moving forward."

Melia was a backup for five MLS seasons for Real Salt Lake (2010-11) and Chivas USA (2012-14) before joining Sporting K.C.
