New York [USA], Dec 11 (ANI): Former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey, who was fired by United States President Donald Trump last year over the ongoing Russia probe, has called on the people to "use every breath" to defeat the latter in the 2020 presidential election.
While speaking at an event here on Sunday, Comey said that the American voters should make sure that the "lies stop" and the Democratic Party have to win in the presidential polls, which is two years away from now, CNN reported.
"All of us should use every breath we have to make sure the lies stop on January 20, 2021," said the former FBI chief, who oversaw the investigation over alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Calling on the Democrats to bury their ideological differences, the 57-year-old underlined that the party should nominate their "best candidate" to take on Trump in the forthcoming polls.
"I understand the Democrats have important debates now over who their candidate should be, but they have to win. They have to win," Comey remarked.
Asserting that the possibility of Trump being impeached would complicate the situation, the former FBI Director said that "the rise of Trumpism is a political ill" and hoped that the people of the country would rid themselves of the attack on American values in a "landslide" vote.
Firing a fresh salvo over Trump's policies in almost two years, Comey chided about his character, likening the atmosphere around the US President to what he saw in prosecuting mafia figures. He asserted that Trump's tweets on Russia probe could lead to "witness tampering", as per the report.
Special counsel Robert Mueller is currently investigating the possibility of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential polls and a possible collusion between Moscow and Trump's electoral campaign.
Trump has been a vocal critic of Mueller's investigation and has repeatedly called it a "witch hunt" and "unnecessary." He has repeatedly urged Mueller to wrap up the investigation as there was no "trace of collusion". (ANI)
