Will US attack Iran?

United States News.Net
Wednesday 28th March, 2007 (IANS)

Russia has reported increased US military activity in and around the strategic Gulf for the first time in four years after the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has declared that its territories are off limits to anyone for staging military or intelligence operations against Iran.

In a week of ominous developments, the most serious being the Iranian seizure of 15 British Navy personnel near the Shatt al Arab waterway that divides Iran and Iraq, a statement by UAE President Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan that his country would not allow its territories for operations against Iran assumes high significance.

US U-2 spy planes and F-16 and other fighter jets have been based in the UAE ever since the 1990 Gulf crisis over Iraq's occupation of Kuwait. Due to its strategic locations and ports within the Gulf as well as in the Arabian Sea, the use of UAE land, air and waters would have been of immense value to any strike force.

Actually, the US has used bases in all the six Arab Gulf states for operations in Iraq and, to some extent, also to support its and coalition troops in Afghanistan.

Although, all the six states -- Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait -- have expressed unwillingness in the past for a military engagement with their immediate Shia neighbour Iran, this is the first time that one of them, the UAE, has flatly denied its territories to the US for military and intelligence operations against Iran.

In a major policy statement on the eve of Arab summit in Riyadh, Shaikh Khalifa disclosed that the UAE had sent a written communication to Iran to assure that 'we shall never allow the use of our soil for any military, security or intelligence activities against them'.

'We have reiterated to our Iranian brothers, in a letter delivered recently by the Foreign Minister (Shaikh Abdullah), that we are not a party to the conflict between Iran and the US and that we shall never allow the use of our soil for any military, security or intelligence activities against them,' he was quoted as saying in an interview with the London-based Arabic daily Al Hayat, a report on which was made available through the state-run Emirates News Agency WAM.

It may be noted that the US and allied navy vessels primarily take their oil, food and other supplies from ports in the UAE as also from the five other Arab states in the strategic Gulf.

The UAE itself has a dispute with Iran, stemming from the occupation of three of its islands by the Shah of Iran on the eve of its independence from Britain Dec 2, 1971. All other Gulf countries, tied by the 1981 regional security and economic pact of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), have extended UAE support. But Teheran insists that the islands are part of the Iranian territory.

The UAE has offered to settle the issue bilaterally or through international mediation, saying any outcome would be binding. Iran has refused.

Two of these islands are at the narrow Strait of Hormuz, the mouth of the strategic Gulf waterway, from which nearly half the world oil supplies pass through for international consumption.

On his part, the UAE president also explained that his country's method to regain control of its three islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa 'is not subject to any regional or international political agenda. We shall never strengthen our position with any foreign stance to solve the issue of the occupied islands'.

But that the US is in a buildup mode is also evident from the entry of its aircraft carrier, USS John C Stennis (CVN 74), in the Gulf Tuesday.

In an official statement, Washington announced: 'While in the Gulf, the flagship of the USS John C Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSSG) and its air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, will conduct a dual-carrier exercise with the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKE CSG). This marks the first time the Stennis and Eisenhower strike groups have operated together in a joint exercise while deployed to the US Fifth Fleet area of responsibility.

'This exercise demonstrates the importance of both strike groups' ability to plan and conduct dual task force operations as part of the US long-standing commitment to maintaining maritime security and stability in this region.

'Two air wings from the aircraft carriers will conduct air warfare exercises while the surface components will conduct exercises in three general disciplines: anti-submarine, anti-surface and mine warfare.'

The US never discloses the location of its nuclear capable submarines but some of them have routinely surfaced in the Gulf waters for a show of force or replenishment over the past 15 years. One, two, or more of them, should likely be in the vicinity.

Their main nearby base is Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, strengthened and enlarged during the 1980s by importing stones from the barren coastal hills in Oman and the UAE.

But will there be a war? Will Iran budge from its insistence on allegedly building nuclear capability and will it release the British personnel?

Former Iranian President Mohammed Khatami, who was in New Delhi last week, categorically restated his government's stand that Iran will never build nuclear weapons although no one could deny it the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

The heart of the problem lies in the fact that the Iranian programme is largely based on proliferated nuclear technology from Pakistan, and the US and other countries are not willing to give Teheran the allowance that it will not misuse this technology. Iran is also a signatory to non-proliferation, and bound by this treaty under international law.

But will there be a war?

Both in 1990-91 and March 2003, this writer was present in Abu Dhabi. Both times there were clear indications that war was imminent. There were hush-hush talks of an asylum for the late Iraqi president Saddam Hussein a month or so before the second US offensive on Iraq. One day before the operations were actually launched on a Wednesday-Thursday night, there were tell tale signals that the negotiations had failed and an attack was imminent.

There was actually a large US contingent at the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) 2003. One day before the operations began, all the top US participants suddenly left for home, including a Boeing vice president with whom this writer had a scheduled appointment for a discussion on 'Networking and Technology in Future Wars'.

Back to the question of war, President George W. Bush is having a tough time with the Democratic majority Congress. But as the Supreme Commander of the US armed forces, he would continue a gradual build up and place his assets in the region. It's better if some nearby land bases are available. But the US forces can comfortably operate from ships, including commercial platforms, as well as Diego Garcia, at least for distant standoff bombing from aircraft and naval vessels.

The immediate stated target nonetheless should not be more than securing the Gulf waterway. And that's exactly where the problem lies.

The Iranian coast spans nearly all the 989-km length of the waterway, facing all the Arab Gulf states from Oman to Kuwait, and touching Iraq. At its narrowest point, the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway is only 56 km wide and, at many points, shallow.

Iran could block the waterway, simply by sinking a few ships or placing sea mines, as it demonstrated during the Iran-Iraq war.

The resulting energy crisis would cripple the world economy, and that's a nightmare even for the US. It may be noted that even after the crisis over the US hostages taken by Iranians during the 1979 Islamic revolution, the Iranian oil never went out of the international market and that the US companies continued to be among its buyers.

So while a limited engagement cannot be ruled out, particularly as incidents like the seizure of naval personnel provide instant triggers for skirmishes, an actual outbreak of war between Iran and the US and its allies seems unlikely.

For the time being at least.

Will US attack Iran?

Agree with the conclusion that the threat of war between Iran and the US in the immediate future is unlikly.

Unfortunately, “gunboat diplomacy” no longer works for Americans when the world community knows they would sell their souls and compromise their national honor to satisfy an adiction to Mid-East oil.

The Iranian leadership well knows this and will not be dissuaded from a campaign to further turn world opinion against the “great satan”.

If Iran continues on the current course, war will be unavoidable; if not with a Western alliance, it will be with a Mid-East confederation or Israel alone in its struggle to survive.

Will US attack Iran

The US with Britian must hit Iran hard. If they wait a couple of years it will be far worse.

Dont even think the US is bogged down in Iraq, they can mobilize their forces within hours and be on the Iranian border within 2 days. If the brits get involved because of the kidnapping of their sailors they will add thousands more troops to the battle field and if the brits and americans combine their forces Iran wont stand a chance. With the 2 carrier groups and 4 nuclear subs in the region the Iranians wont get off the ground and all their defences will not be effective. I served 8 years in the military and I know what the outcome will be, it will be total destruction and Iran will be on the recieving end... You can take that to the bank........

Anonymous

The 2 carrier groups alone have more than 100 fighter bombers and 4 nuclear submarines and many smaller ships including mine sweepers plus the B-1 bombers at Diego Garcia and any bomber fighters that the Brits have. So anyone who thinks Iran has a chance is totally screwed......

If the Iranians were to strike Israel then Israel will join the British and American forces and Iran will be a dust bowl for years.

No nuclear bombs will be necessary. with conventional weapons the Americans, British, and possible Israel in the mix, Iran will be devastated, no country in the world could stand up to these 3 nations combined and the Iranians must know they are in over their heads. Dont ever count out the ability of the United States to accurately weigh the odds...

Ahamadinejad youre at odds with the world powers

Ahamadinejad, keep running your mouth and you’ll be hiding in a hole in the ground just like Saddam, or maybe you’ll be ashes, I wouldn’t start a war because you have made 3 nations very angry. America, England, and Israel. close your mouth and save your ass. Open your mouth and prove youre just another fool....

The American dream is gone

Yes America is powerful but it is irresponsible and not that intelligent. The underestimation of others is characterised in American decisions. They ended up in shambles in Vietnam, Lebanon, Afaghanistan now in Iraq. Yes they can wipe out Iran (destry it) but they can not defeat the Iran fibre. They 3 combined are always troubled by exit strategies. May be they should start by planning their exit strategies even inside their own teritories.

Well, if the West attacks Iran it’s looking increasingly likely that Israel will attack too; thus the prospect of a Middle East Regional War is a frightening but very possible scenario. Iran won’t be a pushover like Iraq though.

Will US Atack Iran?

The question is not will they , the question is when? Iran denies the right of Israel to exist - BIG MISTAKE! President of Iran is messing with Israel and putting his people in danger. It is obvious that there will be many casualties in Iran. Has Mr. Ahamadinejad thought about his own people? The nuclear ambition of iranian president is putting Middle East and the whole world in danger. How can he talk about US being agressor if he himself is escalating the problem? US will screw up in Iraq anyway and will have to leave just give it some time Mr.Ahamadinejad. An old english saying goes “Don’t trouble the trouble untill trouble troubles you..."

if ahmedinejad can simply keep his voice low, it would do one hell of a lot of good for the iranians. at least delay the inevitable. coz regardless who is in power, invasion of iran is vital for US strategic interests.
as for winning, i can comfartably say, we’d have won it before the iranians got to know it even started.

What will Iran do?

If Iran ever got hit by anyone, USA, Britain, Israel, whom ever. Than Iran will hit back at everyone in the Gulf and will continue to hit back over and over again, until the western forces are either forced to invade Iran, or leave the Middle East for ever. This will not be a one time strike and its over, Iran will destroy everything around it and will keep on doing so till one side or the other gives up. The Nuclear option in the hands of the west, would have to be used in a massive force to stop Iran, which would mean the contamination of the world. Iran knows that, and martyrdom is of no concern to its leaders. The rest of the world does not share this same value.

Attack on Iran

One of the first U.S. objectives would be to destroy Iran’s navy, or to bottle it up in its home ports with mines. The U.S.N. would then control the Strait, not Iran. At the same time, aircraft and several hundred cruise missiles would be making surprise strikes on all the components of Iran’s air defenses. Using surprise, the U.S. would probably achieve air supremacy quickly.

At that point, probably within two days or less, Iran would be defenseless against a second round of air attacks on its most important nuclear sites. B-2’s would probably be the centerpiece of these attacks, using a new 28,000 lb. penetrating bomb against targets like the underground certrifuge galleries at Natanz.

It is significant that Nimitz is bringing so many destroyers with it — four. It may be relieving Ike as claimed — but Nimitz could arrive a day or so before a scheduled attack, as Ike left the Gulf. Ike could then stop in the Gulf of Oman while still within striking range.

That would temporarily make the fleet 3 carriers with 162 F/A-18’s; an amphibious group with an MEU aboard; at least 2 attack subs; and 4 cruisers and 11 destroyers, with a total of 1,500+ missile tubes. If 50% of these were reserved for air defense, the force would have more than 750 Tomahawks.

The hours of darkness, a nearly new moon, and political desirability of having the news break on a weekend make the 20th-21st look likely — if the Nimitz group can average about 26 mph. If not, the next weekend might also work.

Evidence of Iran meddling in Iraq...
:mad:
Coalition finds cache of Iranian money and weapons in Iraq
May 24, 2007 – Coalition forces in Iraq killed two “terrorists”, detained 19 “suspected terrorists” and uncovered a cache of Iranian money and bomb-making materials Wednesday morning in the Baghdad slum Sadr City, the U.S.-led military in Iraq announced.

]
“The individual targeted during the raid is suspected of facilitating weapons shipments from Iran to secret cell terrorist elements in Baghdad, Basrah and Maysan province”, a statement by the Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I) said.

“Rogue militia elements and terrorists are seeking to destroy the future of Iraq”, said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson. “We will continue to capture or kill them and dismantle their organisations”.

Coalition Forces searched 11 buildings during the operation. “As Coalition Forces moved to the site, four armed terrorists engaged them with small arms and automatic weapons. The ground force, acting in self-defense toward the hostile threat, returned fire and confirmed two of the four terrorists were killed”, the statement said, adding, “As they continued to search the buildings, Coalition Forces found a large quantity of Iranian money, more than $6,000 in U.S. money and improvised explosive device-making materials”.

Bush Wants Tougher Penalties on Iran
Thursday, May 24, 2007 — President Bush said Thursday the leaders of China and Russia “have got to understand” that they and the world will suffer if Iran is allowed to join the roster of nuclear-armed nations.

]
The Western members of the U.N. Security Council, plus Germany, have pushed for tough penalties against Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment, which can produce fuel suitable to generate power or the weapons-grade material for nuclear warheads. But opposition from Russia and China has led the Security Council to settle for watered-down measures. Bush said Iran’s defiance means it is time to go further.

“The world has spoken and said, `You know, no nuclear weapons programs.' And yet they’re constantly ignoring the demands," he told reporters during a Rose Garden news conference. “My view is that we need to strengthen our sanction regime." Iran insists its nuclear program is only for developing energy and that giving it up would cripple Tehran’s goal of becoming a world power. Iran contend the penalties are illegal because it has the right to generate nuclear power under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

The United States and its allies say Iran’s enrichment is about secretly pursuing nuclear weapons. The president said he planned to urge Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Vladimir Putin than “an Iran with a nuclear weapon would be incredibly destabilizing for the world." The Security Council punished Iran in December for refusing to suspend its enrichment and modestly increased the penalties in March after Tehran stepped up its program. Iran responded by giving the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency less access to its nuclear facilities.

;)
US downplays talk of Iran attack
October 31, 2007 - AFTER weeks of escalating US rhetoric on Iran, the White House vowed overnight vowed to “pursue every possible diplomatic means” to defuse the volatile dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program.

]
Spokeswoman Dana Perino sought to quiet fears that US President George W. Bush plans to attack the Islamic republic over its refusal to freeze sensitive nuclear work that can lead to the development of atomic weapons. “There’s no reason for people to think that the president is about to attack Iran. I think that we need to make that clear," she said. “He doesn’t want people to fear that, because what he is doing is pursuing a diplomatic track."

Ms Perino pointed to Mr Bush’s meetings next week with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as evidence of diplomatic efforts to convince Iran to bow to international pressure over its nuclear program. “He believes it’s important for him to pursue every possible diplomatic means in order to persuade Iran to stop its pursuit of a nuclear weapon," said the spokeswoman. Tehran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Asked whether she was sure that Ms Bush was not about to strike Iran, Ms Perino said: “I’m positive of that, and we’re pursuing the diplomatic track." “It’s not the fault of the United States that we’re in this position. It’s the recalcitrance of Iran, they were provided a means to have a civil nuclear program with the cooperation of the international community, and they walked away from the table," she said.

“We would like to have them reverse that course, and (US) Secretary (of State Condoleezza) Rice said we would meet with her Iranian counterpart anytime, anywhere, but they’ve yet to take us up on that offer," said Ms Perino. “That’s why we pursued the sanctions last week and we are pushing for a third resolution in the UN Security Council - (which will) probably take place next month," she said.

Israel gonna have to go it alone...
:confused:
Israel Must Deal With Iranian Threat Alone, Former UN Official Says
January 24, 2008 - Israel will have to decide whether to go it alone in a military operation against Iran’s nuclear program before the end of President Bush’s term, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said here this week.

]
“For the next year the United States will essentially be a bystander in international affairs on the subject [of Iran:

— quite tragically but almost inevitably," Bolton told the annual gathering of the Herzliya Conference this week. The conference dealt with Israel’s national security. Unclassified portions of a U.S. National Intelligence Estimate released in December said Iran had a nuclear weapons program but halted it in 2003. That NIE has destroyed the diplomatic strategy of the Bush administration, Bolton told Cybercast News Service, because the findings make it “almost impossible for President Bush to contemplate the use of force." The NIE also said that Iran was continuing to enrich uranium and would have enough for a bomb by 2010 at the earliest.

The U.S. has been leading the international campaign against Iran, claiming it is using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to obtain atomic weapons. Since the release of the U.S. National Intelligence Estimate, Israel has gone to great lengths to convince Washington that its assessment is flawed. Pointing to the Iranian ballistic missile program and its continued pursuit of uranium enrichment, Israel says that Iran most definitely is still pursuing nuclear weapons.

“The NIE has given Iran almost a free path toward a decision to create a nuclear weapons capability, and that I think — unfortunately for Israel — heightens the likelihood that they (Israel) will come to a decision point in the very near future about whether to use their own force to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon capability," Bolton said. While the U.S. is not likely take any military action of its own as long as President Bush is in office, Bush would support Israel, Bolton said.

'US will confront Iran if necessary'
29 Jan 2008, WASHINGTON: US President George W Bush has warned Iran that the United States will “confront those who threaten our troops” and defend its allies and interests in the Gulf.

]
Bush, in excerpts of his State of the Union speech provided by the White House, also urged Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment programme, embrace political reforms, and “cease your support for terror abroad." “But above all, know this: America will confront those who threaten our troops, we will stand by our allies, and we will defend our vital interests in the Persian Gulf," he said.

His message echoed US warnings about an early January face-off between US and Iranian ships in the Strait of Hormuz and came as Washington pushed for new UN sanctions against Tehran over its disputed nuclear programme. “Our message to the people of Iran is clear: We have no quarrel with you, we respect your traditions and your history, and we look forward to the day when you have your freedom," said Bush.

“Our message to the leaders of Iran is also clear: Verifiably suspend your nuclear enrichment, so negotiations can begin. And to rejoin the community of nations, come clean about your nuclear intentions and past actions, stop your oppression at home, and cease your support for terror abroad," he said. Bush was to deliver the speech at 9 pm (local time). The White House said it would be his final State of the Union address before leaving office in January 2009.
